If you live in the Midwest and are unfamiliar with Rhymesayers’ super consistent festival-brain child Soundset, you’ve missed out on a lot of awesome Memorial Day Weekend celebrations over the years. With the 7th annual edition occuring this past Sunday, the Striker Bros made the trek to Shakopee, MN for a day full of performances from some of hip-hop’s top representatives. Don’t believe that a town in Minnesota that you’ve never heard of can play host to the best rap festival in the Midwest? Well with a stacked line up ranging from super OGs Nas & Cypress Hill, to some of the top mainstream artists like Wiz Khalifa & 2Chainz, you may have to reconsider your assumptions. As over 30,000 people flooded the gates with their attendance, this was the biggest year Soundset has had, and speaking from an attendee’s perspective, it was one of their most seamless efforts to date.
Luckily, I had the opportunity to shoot the festivities, and the resulting array of photos seem to capture the mood pretty well. While the headliners deservedly received a lot of anticipation, some of my favorite performances from the day came from up-and-comers such as Flatbush Zombies, Jonwayne, and Allan Kingdom. With that being said, I don’t think I saw a single poor performance; Earlwolf, Chance The Rapper, Lizzo & Lazerbeak, and Atmosphere all had phenomenal sets. Alright, enough talking about it, head below for a bunch of pictures from the day in case you want to relive your experience from a different perspective or live vicariously through my camera lens.
